The Case for Multiple Media with Patti Vincent

Patti Vincent (Ep.75) was an oil painter, but a trip to Japan changed everything.

She and her husband were traveling to visit her son who was in the Air Force.

She'd committed to a month of Strada Easel Challenge and absolutely didn't want the hassle of trying to bring oil paints to Japan or try and find them while traveling.

So she thought she'd give gouache a try. She fell in love with how easy it was for painting, for cleaning up AND for travel. She realized that maybe she needed to expand her materials.

Put it to Practice:

Different media have different pros and cons. You may find that you require several different media to meet your different needs as an artist.

For example, if you love oil painting but travel by plane often, maybe you have a kit of gouache to bring while traveling.

If you use acrylic but don't want to risk staining the AirBnB carpet, watercolor is a great option.

If you need something fast on the days you don’t have a ton of time, maybe you turn to acrylic. Then use oil when you have larger spans.

Using different media requires different skills. However, once you have the basics, you'll be able to take advantage of their unique properties. You can find media that fit different parts of your artistic life… Be that travel or just shorter amounts of time.
