What Experienced Painters Know About Art Supplies

There are so many materials available to you as an artist. It can be overwhelming.

Ep.50 guest, Hasim Akib says the good news is that you may not need as many materials as you think to get started strong.

To get started, Akib suggests the basics:

Something to paint on.
Something to paint with.
A limited set of five colors, including the primaries and white.

That’s it. You may already have these in your stash.

Put it to Practice:

Sometimes our instincts tell us that we can buy our way out of artistic problems. That if we just had the perfect brush or one new tube of color, all our issues would be solved.

But that’s rarely the case.

Most often, the only way to solve artistic problems is to paint through them.

And what you need to actually paint a good painting isn’t much.

As a bonus, the fewer supplies you have, the easier it is to paint and the quicker you’ll master those materials.

So if you have something to paint on, something to paint with, and a limited set of colors, you already have everything you need to get started. And if you find yourself going back to the art store again and again, you might be delaying. It’s time to just get started painting.
