Not All Practice is Studio Practice

When Ep.15 guest, Debbie Miller, first decided to get confident with color, she found time outside of her morning painting sessions to do it. One of her most successful spots: In front of the television.

She pulled out her watercolors or her gouache and would just mix colors to see what happened. And yes, the way the colors mixed would be a bit different in her acrylic work, but that time helped her understand how color mixing in general worked.

Plus it didn’t feel like work.

Put it to Practice:
Finishing paintings is a great way to build skill. But painting has its own kind of stress. Not to mention just a hundred variables to juggle.

If you find an area where you could use a little focused practice, it’s worth the time creating space for exploration outside of your finished painting. That way you can get hyper focused and understand cause and effect without the complexity (and confusion) of a whole painting.

Then you can bring those skills back into your painting practice.
